What is SEO? & Why Website Needs SEO?

For the past recent months I have posted articles for experienced people who are in SEO for more than 2 years, but today I planned to post an article for the beginners who don’t know about SEO? And why their website needs the SEO Service to be done? Ok let’s come to the point

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
It’s an art of making your website relevant to search engines in order to rank highly in their search results.

SEO has been traditionally divided in to two areas

1. On Page Optimization
2. Off Page Optimization

On page optimization refers to the things that are done in the pages of the website itself
Off Page Optimization covers the activity that takes place outside of your website.

On Page Optimization Checklist:

Always start SEO campaign with keyword research
• Meta tag optimization
• URL optimization
• Image Optimization
• Anchor text Optimization
• H1 tag Optimization
• Content Optimization
• Sitemap and robots file creation
• Bread crump navigation

Off page Optimization Checklist

• Article submission
• Forum posting
• Directory submission
• Social bookmarking
• Blog commenting
• Guest blogging
• Link wheel

Avoid spammy SEO Techniques such as

• Hidden text
• Hidden links
• Keyword stuffing
• Doorway pages
• Website cloaking
• Mirror website

Finally, why your website needs SEO service?

Whether your website provides Content, Service, Product or Information Search Engines is the best way to reach millions of internet users. Most of the web traffic are driven by search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and MSN, if your website is not found by search engines then you will lose a huge number of online users.

I hope I have given a clear idea on the value of SEO so let’s begin optimizing your website for search engines and make your website reach millions of online users very effectively.

If Modified Since HTTP Header

The If modified since http header tells search engine spider one of two things about a webpage.
• This webpage has not changed so no need to download again.
• This webpage has changed so download again because there is a new information.

How does it work?
• Let’s say you have a website about pets that has pages about dogs, cats, and turtles.
• You have just updated the turtle page with new photos.
• Every once in a while Googlebot (the search engine crawler of Google) will visit your pages. It will check each page in your website and if it none of the pages have changed, it will not load any of those pages.
• But in our case, the turtle page has changed (and has a “flag” up”). So when Googlebot comes it will see the “flag” for the turtle page and it will access the turtle page.
• It knows that the turtle page has been updated because of the If Modified Since header code. Since none of the other web pages have been updated, there is no reason to get a new copy of them since it already has a current copy in the index.

How to create robots.txt

Robots.txt

Robots.txt file restrict access to the site by the search engine spider that crawl the web.

Simple robots.txt syntax

User-agent: *
Disallow: /computer
Any robot should not visit any URL that starts with /computer.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /computer
User-agent: Google
Disallow: /
Any robot should not visit any URL starts with /computer except Google.

To block entire site
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

To give access to the entire site

Disallow:

Using Meta Tags to Block Access to Your Website.

meta name=”robots” content=”Noindex, Follow”
meta name=”robots” content=”Index, Nofollow”
meta name=”robots” content=”Noindex, Nofollow”

Using Webmaster Tool to create robots.txt

1. On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want.
2. Under Site configuration, click Crawler access.
3. Click the Generate robots.txt tab.
4. Select your default robot access. (Allow all robots) and use the next step to exclude any particular bots you don’t want accessing your site. This will help avoid problems with accidentally blocking crucial crawlers from your site.
5. State any additional rules. For example, to block Googlebot from all files and directories on your site:
1. In the Action list, select Disallow.
2. In the Robot list, click Googlebot.
3. In the Files or directories box, type /.
4. Click Add. The code for your robots.txt file will be automatically generated.

6. Save your robots.txt file by downloading the file or copying the contents to a text file and saving as robots.txt. Save the file to the highest-level directory of your site. The robots.txt file must reside in the root of the domain and must be named “robots.txt”. A robots.txt file placed in a subdirectory isn’t valid, as bots only check for this file in the root of the domain. For instance, http://www.example.com/robots.txt is a valid location, but http://www.example.com/mysite/robots.txt is not.
